Licensed Dentists and Dental Hygienists are required to take this course.
The New York State Education Department requires healthcare, educational, and other licensed professionals to be trained to identify and report child abuse. This 3-hour program includes the updated 2023 curriculum as mandated by NYSED. Upon successful completion, your coursework will be reported to NYSED for documentation by the Continuing Education Department of Mohawk Valley Community College. This course also offers 3 MCE credits toward licensure as approved by the Fifth District Dental Society.
By the end of this training, you will:
- Be able to determine if a child shows indicators of maltreatment or abuse, including in a virtual setting
- Recognize the impact of trauma and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) on children, families, and yourself
- Recognize the mitigating effects of the five protective factors on trauma
- Recognize the impact of bias on your decision-making
- Understand when you have a legal obligation to call the SCR
- Recognize how you may better connect individuals and families with services
- Know how to prepare to make the call to the SCR
- Know how to complete the LDSS 2221A form
- Understand your rights as a mandated reporter
